University of Delhi Admission to the PhD Program (History) 2016

The notification for University of Delhi Entrance Test for PhD in History 2016 has been announced. University of Delhi (DU) invites applications, for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in History offered at Department of History for the session 2016 through an entrance test.

Candidates will be called for an interview on 15th February 2016

Eligibility Criteria

1.Students having fellowships/scholarships instituted by the University /National and International agencies under schemes approved /recognized by the University, through procedure laid down by the University , shall be registered provisionally by the Departmental Research Committee and Board of Research Studies, and confirmed after completion of course work, by the respective Board of Research Studies.

  1. Students who are otherwise eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Program but do not have any financial assistance, shall be admitted through an entrance examination to be conducted by the respective departments or/ and through an interview by the Departmental Research Committee.
  2. Foreign students with their national or other fellowships recognized by the University or sponsored by their employers, shall be given provisional admission ,followed by confirmation through due process after a stipulated period of time.
  3. The University/College teachers holding permanent, temporary or ad hoc positions and having completed two years of service as teacher in a Department/Constituent Colleges of the University of Delhi.
  4. Candidates sponsored by their employers shall be considered only if they get study leave for a period of two years to fulfill residency requirements of the University of Delhi.
  5. Permanent teachers/employees, who are in service in any other recognized University/College/Research Institute in India and has also a minimum of three years teaching/research experience, shall be considered if they get study leave for a period of two years to fulfill residency requirements of the University of Delhi.

7.A candidate must have obtained a Master’s /M.Phil. Degree from the University of Delhi, or any other recognized University, or any degree recognized as equivalent in the subject in which the candidate wishes to pursue a course of research, or in an allied subject. He/she must have obtained either a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grading in the M.Phil. Degree or a minimum of 55%marks or equivalent grading in the Master’s Degree.

  1. Students who are initially registered for the M.Phil. Programme of the University and who also

obtain a score of 60% marks in Part I examination of the M.Phil. Programme shall be eligible for

admission to the doctoral programme.

Interested candidates are required to submit their application along with one copy of the synopsis on the topic of their proposed research to the office of the Department of History

Selection Procedure

In the case of those whom the Ordinances of the University have expressly exempted, only those who clear the qualifying written exam shall be eligible to be called for the interview

Admission to the PhD program will be based on the interview, where the candidate’s preparation for independent and original research and his/her research proposal will be evaluated

The qualifying exam shall be of two hours’ duration. Candidates will be required to answer any one question from out of four. The maximum marks will be 100

The questions for the exam will consist of passages from significant texts in history and will be chosen keeping the post-graduate History syllabi of the University of Delhi as a standard. The subject matter will include themes from all periods of Indian history and world history, historiography, and the use of sources

The essay will be evaluated on the basis of the discernment of the major argument of the passage, reasoning, clarity, innovation in presentation, and originality of thought. The question paper will be in English. Students have the option of answering the question in English or Hindi
