National Institute of Design invites applications for admission to Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Design for the academic year 2017-18.
Full-time PhD Course: The full-time PhD Degree course shall ordinarily be of three years and of which monthly stipend shall be given for three years. Students requiring extension of the full-time PhD course after three years may get extension of maximum two years in installment of six months each.
Part-time PhD Course: The part-time PhD degree course shall ordinarily be of five
years.The part-time PhD course shall be open to candidates working in academia/industry/research organizations who are unable to pursue the full time doctoral course in residence, for personal or professional reasons. Candidates enrolled in the part-time PhD course shall not be entitled to any fellowship or teaching assistantship. Students requiring extension of the course after five years may get extension of maximum two years in installment of six months each.
The following shall be the minimum eligibility for admission to the PhD course in Design:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution/recognized university in design OR NID’s PGDPD, AEPEP or 5-5½ year SLPEP diploma in design. Candidates with a master’s degree in areas relevant to design may also apply. The Institute shall notify a list of such areas from time to time.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution/recognized university in design OR
NID’s GDPD or 4-4½ year SLPEP diploma in design, with at least 3 years of professional
and/or teaching experience. Candidates with bachelor’s degree in areas relevant to design may
also apply. The Institute shall notify a list of such areas from time to time.
Candidates who have successfully completed a faculty development course in
design or related field (2 years or more duration) from NID or any other university recognized
by the UGC/Institutes of National Importance shall be eligible to apply. They shall be treated at
par with the Master’s level students.
An applicant with qualification in subjects other than Design (as notified by the
Institute from time to time) shall be entitled to apply for admission to the PhD course provided that the applicant shall have demonstrated interest and aptitude for study of design, and shall qualify the Design Research Aptitude Test for PhD (DRAT-PhD).
Applicants currently employed in the public sector and seeking admission shall be required to submit a letter from their employer in support of the application. Upon admission the scholar shall be expected to fulfill the course requirements by personally attending the Institute.
Candidates who apply for admission to the PhD course shall be required to submit, in addition to the relevant documents as may be prescribed, a well-developed Research Proposal of about 2000-3000 words.
The proposal submission shall be followed by a qualifying examination (Design Research Aptitude Test-PhD). Design professionals with more than 10 years of experience may be exempted from the Design Research Aptitude Test and may be directly admitted to the interview stage on submission of their proposal. Personal Interview: The entrance test shall be followed by a personal interview/presentation to the Selection Committee in Ahmedabad. On selection, a Research Guide shall be assigned to every registered student.
Application for admission is to be made in the prescribed form downloaded from the Institute’s website. Applications must be complete in all respects, and copies of certificates must be enclosed. Incomplete applications will be rejected. The list of required documents will be uploaded on the Institute’s website.
Application fees will have to be paid as part of the application process. Proposals will not be assessed until all the required application formalities are completed.
Applicants currently employed and seeking admission, must submit a letter from the employer in support of the application/a no-objection certificate from their organization. Upon admission the PhD scholar is expected to fulfill the admission requirements by personally visiting the Institute. Thereafter, the scholar is expected to visit the Institute at stipulated times to fulfill academic requirements.
No TA/DA is admissible for joining the course.
