The Institute of Journalism, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram has invited applications for admission to the Certificate Course in Photo Journalism offered by it.

Established in 1968, the Institute of Journalism of the Press Club Trivandrum has a glorious history of training thousands of youngsters into being journalists of note; most of them have established themselves as warriors of the Fourth Estate across the Globe

One of the earliest schools of journalism in the country, this institute is run by the Press Club of Trivandrum, and its faculty is drawn from among professional journalists

The courses offered

The Institute now offers 3 post-graduate diploma courses in Journalism

1. Training in Print Journalism; there are two batches – one in the morning and the other in the evening

2. Training for Electronic Journalism, covering TV, Radio, Web and Films

3. A special course for senior citizens

4. Certificate course in Photojournalism

Course Objective

Despite technologies that in recent years have transformed how news and information are produced and distributed, the strength of the still image remains undiminished especially with the advent of the new media; photographs, presented alone or as an essay in a multimedia context, continue to provide the photojournalists and others who make them, a uniquely powerful window onto the world in which we live

Certificate course in Photojournalism is a beginners’ course in the fundamentals of photography, including digital editing procedures, basic composition and exposure and the use of cameras; the course explores the importance of the visual images in communicating ideas and information

The student will learn to recognize quality photographs, both technically and aesthetically, and will learn to make, manage and edit photographs with digital cameras, media, computers, and software

The student will be exposed to the ethics of using images for news and editorial purposes, and in the process will learn to become conversant with photographic terminology through the critique process

Course Duration

Duration of the course will be three months from the day the classes start; lectures and discussions will be held on weekend days from 09.30 am to 03.30 pm; afternoon sessions are earmarked for practical sessions

The medium of instruction is English – of course, with special room for Malayalam

Classes are handled by experienced professionals in media and academics; along with this there will be workshops and seminars and guest lectures. Students are encouraged to find their own outlets to publish their photographs in legacy and new media

Eligibility for Admission

Minimum academic qualification for admission to the course is a pass in higher secondary from a recognised Board of Examination; all applicants should have computer literacy; there is no minimum or maximum age limit

Prescribed application form together with the prospectus can be obtained from the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram-695001 on payment of Rs.200/- or Rs.250/- by Money Order / Demand Draft in favour of the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram

The duly filled application form should reach the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram-695001 by 15th November 2014

Candidates who satisfy the requirements in the preliminary screening will be called for an interview and final selection

Fees Details

The fees for the course, Rs.30000/- is payable at the time of admission (this amount includes admission fee, tuition fee, library fee, lab journal fee, computer fee, registration fee for the exam & the exam fee)

There will be a caution deposit of Rs.3000/- which will be refunded when the course is completed subject to terms and conditions of usage

Equipment and Supplies

Students need to bring their own fully adjustable camera with interchangeable lenses. Owning a variety of lenses i.e. wide angles, telephotos and in some cases, zoom lenses – will be very helpful, but not required. Students need to provide their own digital cards and they will need to purchase a USB or any sort of portable memory

They might also want to buy a stack of writeable CDs, too. If necessary the faculty can give advice regarding the purchase of equipment

Method of Assessment

The students will be assessed during the course and through an examination at the end of the course. There will be five papers and each paper will have Continuous Comprehensive Assessment and a final Exam etc
